I graduated with the Class of 1988 from GCMS. My career began at the GCMS Hospital, where I served as both a faculty member and medical director. Today, I practice as an OB-GYN with the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group in Virginia, USA.

I am an assistant professor of Public Health in occupational healh and safey at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia. I get my MPH degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management from the University of Gondar, Ethiopia in 2016; and BSc degree in Environmental Health sciences from Hawassa university, Ethiopia in 2008.
I had joined the University of Gondar as letcurer in October 2016. I has been teaching as well as supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students on their research thesis works. Alongside my academic duties,I was serving as Chairman of “clean and safe health facility” [CASH] initiatives & Infection prevention committee of Gondar university comprehensive specialized hospital from October 2016 until January 2017.
Befor my academic engagement I had eight years of experience working as a hygiene & sanitation officer at grass root health facilty level; and as communicable disease expert, public health emergency management officer a woreda health offices.Even most of my carrier was in capacity of environmental health officer; shouldering & exercising health & safety duties make me an effective asset to peruse any Environmental & occupational related researches & projects.
I had been engaged in several research projects and produced scientific publications in peer reviewed journals ;and serve as Peer reviwer for numerous peer reviwed journals as well.I serve as inernal examiner for ore than 7 postgraduate students.my research interest includes healthcare safety,public health emergency management,constracion safe,fire safety,workplace violence,infection prevention,residential safety,waste management, and food safety among the pool of field of practices in public health.

Aschalew Abayneh Workineh is a passionate public health leader with over 17 years of experience in public health, emergency management, and health systems strengthening. He is currently a Senior Scientific Writer and Editor at the World Health Organization (WHO) Ethiopia Country Office, where he also leads the Emergency Management Support Pillar and manages the Ethio-Pandemic Multi-Sectoral Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (EPPR) Project.
Throughout his career, Aschalew has been instrumental in guiding public health responses to complex emergencies, including pandemics, epidemics, and natural disasters. His expertise in collaborating with governments, international NGOs, and UN agencies has made him a strategic leader in implementing One Health principles and promoting sustainable health initiatives. His leadership in projects like the Comprehensive Documentation and Review of COVID-19 Response in Ethiopia has bolstered health system resilience and emergency response capabilities on a national and global scale.
Aschalew is also a strong advocate for education, training, and community engagement, fostering public-private partnerships to build a sustainable health future. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Health at Maastricht University, Netherlands, and holds an MPH in Health Service Management from the University of Gondar, Ethiopia.
Prior to his current roles, Aschalew served as Senior Adviser to the Minister and Chief of Staff to the State Minister at the Ministry of Health, Ethiopia, from 2014 to 2020. He was later appointed by the Prime Minister as Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and National Incident Manager for COVID-19 preparedness and response from 2020 to 2023, where he played a critical role in managing Ethiopia’s pandemic response.
Aschalew’s strategic vision, commitment, and dedication to improving health outcomes have made him a respected and influential figure in global public health.

Dr. Nahom Mulatu is a physician and global health researcher currently pursuing a Master of Science in Global Health at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on improving the diagnosis of Group A Streptococcal pharyngitis in Ethiopian children, with implications for antibiotic stewardship and clinical guidelines in an effort to improve pediatric cardiac care particularly Rheumatic heart disease. He is also interested in global surgery and plans to pursue a general surgery residency before returning to Ethiopia to contribute to surgical care and health system strengthening.
