Dr. Kassaye Demeke Altaye

Dr. Kassaye Demeke Altaye is an Associate professor of emergency and critical care medicine at the University of Gondar. He also holds an MSc in clinical epidemiology and has extensive experience in resource-limited settings, focusing on patient care and clinical research, particularly in clinical trials and implementation science. His work emphasizes improving emergency and critical care practices in challenging environments. He is an experienced academician and clinician dealing daily with acutely ill patients with trauma, infectious diseases, acute complications of non-communicable disease, and acute presentations of neglected tropical diseases like snake bites and leishmaniasis. He had coached and mentored more than 100 medical students, more than 50 different specialty residents, and MSc students. He had done a lot of quality improvement projects at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital as an emergency and critical care service director. This quality improvement project had improved mortality from 4% to 1.2%, lowered 24-hour stays from 60% to less than 10%, and reduced triage time to less than 5 minutes. He had also developed an undergraduate competency-based medical curriculum and a curriculum for specialization in emergency and critical care medicine, which had guaranteed 6 specialities in 2026 and counting on.
